Manic Depression Symptoms and Warning Signs

There are many things that you can look for when trying to identify manic depression symptoms. Manic depression, also known as bipolar disorder, is a disease that affects every aspect of life. The mood swings that are associated with this disorder can create problems that are hard to deal with each and every day.

People with bipolar disorder suffer through cycles of depression and mania. One of the first noticed symptoms of those with bipolar disorder is clinical depression. Depression can cause a person to sleep more than usual, not feel like doing anything, stop talking to friends, stop caring about their appearance and often miss several days of work.

This clinical depression can last anywhere from a few days to a few months. It is often followed by a slow recovery of mood, which later swings into a full manic episode.

Mania is characterized by elevated moods, or elation, restlessness, shopping sprees and unusual sexual behavior. Often those who are experiencing mania act a certain way and later wonder why in the world they would have done or said those things. They often feel as though they are invincible and nothing can hurt them, causing them to act in a reckless manner.

There are many treatments for manic depression, including therapy, drug treatments and a combination of both. Most people with bipolar disorder have to experiment with several treatments before they find one that works well for them. Joining a support group, either locally or online, is also a great way to get help for you and your loved ones.

Manic Depression - Signs and Symptoms

Manic depression refers to mood swings from overly high or manic to overly low or depressed. This illness is also referred to as bipolar disorder. It is a brain disorder that causes unusual changes in your moods, energy as well as your ability to function normally. Although this condition can start at any age, it normally begins in late adolescence. It affects people of all ages, races as well as men and women. Besides affecting your life as the sufferer, this condition can also devastate the lives of your immediate family members.

Symptoms of this disorder are classified as either manic or depressive episodes. A manic episode is diagnosed when an elevated mood occurs with three or other symptoms. This can happen on a daily basis, nearly every day or for a week or even longer. If your mood is irritable, four additional symptoms must be present.

A depressive episode is diagnosed when five or more of these symptoms are exhibited most of the day, nearly everyday or for a period of more than two weeks. In a mixed bipolar episode, you will manifest symptoms of both mania and depression at the same time. You could for example be very sad while feeling energized at the same time.

When you have this condition, you will also experience an increase in energy as well as a decreased need for sleep. Reduced attention span and impaired judgment are other symptoms. Causes of manic depression can be genetic, childhood precursors as well as life experiences and events. There are several pharmacological and psychotherapeutic techniques that treats this condition.

Always Stay Alert For Manic Depression Symptoms

The fist step in treating any illness such as manic depression is the ability to detect the problem, usually through the appearance of certain symptoms associated with an affliction and then making sure that the person suffering from the condition acknowledges and understands that they indeed have a problem and convincing them to seek help.

Unfortunately those who suffer from panic attacks and anxiety which are normal symptoms of depression in many cases will not recognize or admit early enough that there is a problem. The longer the conditions go untreated the greater is the potential for permanent damage.

Because of the tendency of this condition to go undetected medical professionals usually depend on the appearance of symptoms that traditionally indicate the presence of the condition. This detection is complicated because many of the symptoms are not readily detected.

However it is very helpful for non-medical persons to be able to notice when a family member or friend is suffering from these conditions so they can convince the victim to seek professional help early. Some of the symptoms normally associated with the affliction are listed here.

* Increased energy which many times will cause restlessness and sleep loss.

* Anxiety and or panic attacks.

* Euphoric mood swings.

* Lack of good judgment.

* Abnormal spending sprees or hording.

* Extreme irritability.

* Unusual speech behavior as the result of racing or rapid thoughts.

* Aggressive or intrusive behavior.

* Increased sex drive.

* Easily distracted.

* Denial of his or her condition or unusual behavior.

Of course non-medical persons need to be extremely careful in determining if any conditions actually indicate the presence of manic depression but being aware of the potential could help to get a victim to professional care more quickly.

Parents of teenage children need to be especially aware of any indication of the presence of these conditions because the affliction can have devastating effects on that age group. Eating disorders, school troubles and in today's culture substance abuse are all very possible.

Teens will additionally suffer from listlessness, self-pity and hopelessness. Of course some of these conditions in very mild form may be present in any teens development years but when they persist or become acute they must be diagnosed and treated early.

So it would appear that the proper course of action would be to first familiarize oneself with the traditional symptoms and then stay alert for anything that would indicate a problem in yourself or family members or friends.

The best treatment for any ailment is always early detection and early introduction of professional treatment. Although detecting and then seeking help for manic depression symptoms can be difficult, early action usually always has a happy ending.?

Manic Depression Symptoms and Natural Remedies

Manic depression is also known as bipolar affective disorder, or simply bipolar. It is a form of mood disorder in which the subject suffers wide mood swings between extreme elation (mania) and extremely low depression. It is a serious condition that first occurs in either gender at the age of 18-24. The condition can be triggered by medical illness or stress.

What are the symptoms of manic depression, and how can it be distinguished from general depression? The first sign is that the depression involved is more than just feeling temporarily down, but is deeper and more serious than that. The subject is unable to cope with normal everyday problems and the depressive state lasts longer.

Symptoms of the Depressive State

Here are a few other symptoms that you can expect to be exhibited by a manic depressive:

The depression and feeling of unhappiness remains and can't be shrugged off.
The subject will lose interest in what is going on around, and will feel no enjoyment about anything.
A feeling of guilt and excessive worthlessness.
Unable to make decisions.
Unable to focus or concentrate on anything.
Sleeping excessively or an inability to sleep.
General tiredness.
A disinterest in sex.
An inability to handle crows of people.
Unable to function at work.
Unable to see any future.
Restlessness and fidgeting.

There are others, and most of the above are also symptoms of general depression. However, what distinguished someone suffering clinical depression and somebody with bipolar affective disorder is the rapid swing from the depressed state to elation, otherwise known as mania. So what are the symptoms of the manic state that distinguished between general depression and manic depression?

Symptoms of the Manic State

Having been depressed, the patient can then spend a week or so in a hyper manic state. Sometimes the subject will behave strangely and lose any sense of reality. They will be unable to make proper decisions, and in fact behave in strange ways that are both embarrassing and dangerous. Some of the outward signs of the manic state are:

An apparent lack of sleep.
An exceptionally good mood - a euphoric state where they have a profound sense of well-being within themselves.
They will talk quicker and louder than normal, and try to keep up with their racing thoughts.
They may come out with unattainable grandiose ideas that are unrealistic to achieve.
A lack of inhibitions that may lead them to very inappropriate behaviour well outside their normal character.
Euphoric delusions and sometimes even hallucinations that underline their excessive believe in themselves.
Increased sexual drive, and an increased need to spend money quickly.
Very dogmatic, provocative and aggressive, particularly when people disagree with them.

In fact, the manic state is practically the diametric opposite of their character in the depressed state. It is a form of Jekyll and Hyde situation, though not in the sense of schizophrenia where mood changes are not associated with the accompanying depressive or manic states. Also, manic depressives can go long periods between bouts of depression and mania. Nevertheless, the two have occasionally been misdiagnosed as the other.

Treatment for Manic Depression

The traditional treatment for the depressive aspect of manic depression is by antidepressant drugs, while manic episodes are treated using antipsychotic medication. Medication that helps to stabilize mood may also be used, examples of these being Valium and Tegretol. However, the treatment most commonly given in this respect is lithium.

Each of the various drugs have side effects, and it makes sense to use one or more of the natural herbal treatments that have been shown to be at least as effective as the drugs above with a minimum of half of the adverse side effects. Here are some herbal treatments that have been successfully used in treating manic depression, or bipolar disorder.

Herbal Treatment for Manic Depression

Herbs are used by many people to treat their manic depression, often because they could not tolerate the side effects of the regular drugs or perhaps because of a distrust of artificial drugs. Whatever their reason, they do take them, even though most are not as effective a regular drugs and take longer to be absorbed into the body and to have an effect.

Here are some typical; herbs that are used for manic depression. Keep in mind that there are two aspects of dipolar affective disorder: the depressive and the manic stages, and any remedy or treatment must deal with each of these. A herb that can help with depression (there are several of these) may not be able to handle the manic behavior of the subject.

It has been reported by the University Of Maryland Medical Center that herbs are effective treatment for depression and have fewer side effects, but not much mention of the manic condition.

St. John's Wort

St. John's wort is one of the most powerful herbal treatments available for depression, and is at least as good as the best prescription drugs, if not better. With significantly fewer side effects it is an excellent treatment for the depression part of manic depression. However, this is a serious condition, and while it is very effective with mild to medium depression, the severe form of depression brought about by bipolar disorder is a challenge and you must take the herbal treatment every day without fail. It might not cure the condition but it should be able to contain and stabilize it.

Amoryn

Amoryn is a good herbal treatment for anxiety and sadness. It contains hyperforin, also present in St. John's wort, and so has a similar effect. The main effect of hyperforin is to increase the availability of serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine in the brain. These are neurotransmitters than help you to feel good about yourself rather than depressed.

Valerian and Passion Flower

Valerian is a strong herbal treatment for insomnia, and helps those suffering stress, anxiety and depression to get to relax and get to sleep. It also works to reduce your anxiety, but should be taken every day, and at the same each day. Because it is calming valerian is good to take during the manic stage of bipolar affective disorder. Passion flower is another possible herbal treatment during this stage since it too is calming and relaxing.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

These constituents of fish oil may not strictly be herbal, but they are natural and while not a rapid solution to manic depression, it does reduce your depressive feelings over time if taken regularly.

There is no magic pill for manic depression - if there was everybody would take it and the disorder would no longer be a problem. However, there are natural remedies, most of them herbal, which can help you too feel a lot better with the potentially nasty side effects of pharmaceutical treatments.

What Are the Most Common Manic Depression Symptoms?

When manic depression symptoms are left undiagnosed and untreated for a long time, they can lead to many other more serious problems that can be threatening to one's mental and emotional health. For this reason, learning how to identify the signs and to differentiate them from other types of depression is truly very important.

Identifying the Symptoms

Before we enumerate the typical signs, you have to understand that this particular type of psychological disorder is very different from clinical depression or ordinary anxiety. It is actually a more severe variety of the illness, although the symptoms may be quite similar, but to a more serious degree. That said, it is crucial that you seek professional treatment as soon as you notice that you are going through these manic depression symptoms.

Possibly the most distinguishable sign is the frequent switching between extreme highs and extreme lows. For example, a manic depressive person may sometimes appear to be ecstatically and inexplicably happy. The same individual may also go into sudden fits of rage or depression, also without apparent reason. There is no telling when and where these switches can happen. Oftentimes, there is even no logical reason for them at all. Along with these erratic behaviors, manic depressive individuals may also express constant irritability and may easily get annoyed or exhibit violent reactions to seemingly ordinary events.

Another manic depression symptom that is quite common but not as obvious is the notion of grandeur. People experiencing this condition may believe that they are very famous or powerful individuals. Some may even have convinced themselves that they are super heroes of some sort.

Disconnected With Reality

In a similar vein, individuals are also usually disconnected with reality and may seem to have their own system of logic, which is nothing like the logic that most people recognize. They tend to speak incoherently and in disjointed sentences, all of which apparently make perfect sense to them. They also speak quite rapidly, which is probably due to their radically increased energy levels.

Due to their inability to think rationally, manic depressives will not be capable of making sound decisions, even for the simplest things. If their condition is not treated right away, it can worsen to a point that the damage might become irreversible. However, if the manic depression symptoms are identified and treated right away, there is a high probability that the person can go back to living a perfectly normal life.

Symptoms Of Manic Depression

Awareness of the symptoms of manic depression is important, although manic depression or bipolar depression, as it is often referred to, is not very common. It affects approximately 5.7 million Americans.

Symptoms of manic depression are as follows:

Swings in mood: Depending on the severity of the case, these can sometimes be quite rapid. Switching from depression to manic elation puts a person into an emotional roller coaster that can be confusing and even frightening.

When depressed: all the symptoms of clinical depression are present. Lack of interest in things that we used to enjoy, a profound feeling of sadness and disturbances of sleep patterns are just a few symptoms of depression. Sometimes the symptoms of mani depression becomes so intense that thoughts of suicide are very prevalent.

On the other hand when manic episodes occur, other symptoms manifest themselves. Extremely rapid speech can be apparent, irritability, and sometimes, false feelings of grandeur about themselves. There is an increase in energy and a decrease in the ability to sleep. The mood is euphoric and ideas are racing at an uncontrollable pace.

Bipolar or manic depression is treatable. Mood stabilizers are given and even anticonvulsive medications have proven to be helpful. Once moods are stabilized it is easier for the person to take back their life and get things under control again. Although it is not curable as yet at least treatment can decrease symptoms and allow patients to lead a normal life.

This form of depression can start in late adolescence to early adulthood. Sometimes it is not recognized at first and a person can suffer for a longer period without being treated. It is a lifetime illness that needs treatment for a person's whole life.

Symptoms can be accompanied by hallucinations, seeing and hearing things that are not there. These hallucinations are related to the manic or depressive mood the person is experiencing at this time. For instance in a manic mood a person can think they are a king or intensely rich person, with lots of influence. Whereas when they are depressed a person can feel worthless, penniless and even suicidal. It is not uncommon for people experiencing manic depression moods to go on uncontrolled shopping sprees.

Manic Depression Symptoms - The Highs and Lows

Manic depression is a mental disorder that is also called manic depressive disorder. To some, it is known as bipolar disorder. Manic depression symptoms are known to be on the extreme sides of the spectrum. They are either on the high end or the low end. The high-end symptoms are known to be the manic symptoms while the low end is known as the "hypo" symptoms or the depressive symptoms.

This type of mental disorder is hard to spot because the patient may appear to be going well after an episode of depression. Unknown to people around him, he becomes sunny all of the sudden not because he has overcome depression; it is just that he shifted to mania, the other symptom of his illness.

Manic Symptoms

The following are manic depression symptoms observed in patients who suffer from the manic or high end of the mental disease:

o Extreme kindness and euphoric mood.

o Being provocative.

o Inability to concentrate, always and easily distracted.

o Talking very fast due to the racing thoughts that flood the mind.

o Extreme energy level, hyper activity and restlessness.

o Excessive and uncharacteristic spending.

o Incoherence and mixed ideas.

o Increase in sexual drive.

o Intrusive behavior.

o Overly aggressive behavior.

o Very poor judgment

o Believing in his own super powers and unrealistic abilities.

o Extremely irritable.

o Sleeps too little but still have too much energy.

o Abusive use of substances such as cocaine, alcohol, and sleeping medications.

o Falling into a denial stage and not believing that anything is wrong with him.

Depressive Symptoms

The following manic depression symptoms are observed from patients on the low or depressed mode of the disorder.

o Sadness that stays for a considerable length of time accompanied by anxiousness and feeling of emptiness.

o A constant feeling of fatigue and a very low energy level.

o Feeling hopeless and always pessimistic.

o Loss of sexual drive.

o Inability to feel pleasure from anything.

o Inability to concentrate.

o A gnawing sense of guilt and feeling worthless.

o Forgetfulness.

o Restlessness.

o Extreme irritability.

o Inability to make rational decisions.

o Insomnia or oversleeping.

o A drastic loss or gain of appetite that leads to either weight loss or gain.

o Constant body pains that can not be confirmed by medical examinations.

o Suicidal tendencies.

Psychosis is another phenomenon that can be observed as a manic depression symptom. It occurs in both manic and depressive modes of the disorder. It is characterized by hallucination and delusion that is sometimes mistaken for schizophrenia (another form of mental disorder that also manifests hallucination and delusion).

It is important that proper diagnosis be done to tell whether it is manic depression symptom or schizophrenia because the two types of mental disorder need different types of psychological and medical attention.

There are people who exhibit mixed manic depressive symptoms. They manifest both the high and the low end symptoms of the disorder at the same time.

When To Seek Help

As mentioned, it is not easy to determine if a person has manic depressive disorder. If you suspect that you or a loved one is suffering from this mental illness, it would be best if you go and see a psychiatrist to fully assess your condition immediately since the person with this illness has a very erratic and unstable behavior. It can go from shoplifting to promiscuous sexual behavior to suicide. What's more, these behaviors may be manifest within a short period of time.

Proper diagnosis of the manic depressive symptoms is necessary in order to provide the proper treatment needed by the patient. The symptoms are confusing. The assistance of professional people is important in order to recover properly. Administration of medication is almost always necessary to stabilize the patient. Medications would help a patient respond well to other forms of psychiatric treatments such as psychotherapy and cognitive therapy.

Understanding Symptoms of Manic Depression In Children

Until recently, Bipolar disorder, a serious, nevertheless treatable mental illness was rarely diagnosis in young children. The symptoms of this mental illness included extreme changes in mood, energy, thinking, and behavior. Today, doctors can recognize this illness and treat them accordingly in young children.

Also known as manic depression, bipolar disorder symptoms can appear as early as infancy stage. The signs and symptoms include an erratic sleep patterns and much difficulty settling a baby who is diagnosed later in life as having bipolar disorder. Separation anxiety or extreme tantrums and rages may have had happened in the toddler's life.

While children with bipolar disorder do not experience the same syndromes that most adults do, children with bipolar disorder still display signs and traits like changes in mood and behavior that is known to be symptoms of the disorder. Children suffering from moods swings are known as episodes and there are generally two types of episodes. Episodes of extreme elation or agitation followed by high energy are known as mania. Persistent states of extreme sadness or irritability followed by low energy are known as depression.

Unlike most adults, manic depression may seem to be different in children. Children more often suffer from an ongoing mood disturbance that is a mix of mania and depression. This rapid and severe cycling between moods produces chronic irritability and few clear periods of wellness between episodes. Rapid cycling is common among children with bipolar disorder and they may well experience several episodes of mania and depression within a single day. They may also experience mixed cycling where the symptoms of both mania and depression occur simultaneously.

It is also common to find other mental disorders to be diagnosed in bipolar children. These other diagnoses may be in addition to the bipolar disorder, or they may be an incorrect diagnosis of symptoms of bipolar disorder. Some of the commonly found mental disorders are Depression, ADHD (Attention Defecit Hyperactivity Disorder), ODD (Oppositional Defiant Disorder), schizophrenia, and Tourette syndrome.

Today, it is suspected that numerous children diagnosed with attention-deficit disorder with hyperactivity (ADHD) actually have bipolar disorder instead of ADHD. Misdiagnosis on the doctors' part can lead to giving the wrong medication. This can be a serious mistake as it could easily trigger mania or suicidal thoughts within the children.

For some teenagers, it is found that a dearly loss or other traumatic event could trigger a first episode of depression or mania. In later stages, episodes can happen without any obvious stresses, or could even worsen if stress comes along into their life. Puberty is also a time of risk. In girls, the beginning of menstruation may trigger the illness, and symptoms often vary in severity with the monthly cycle.

Early intervention and treatment is the best bet to help young children recover from bipolar disorder. How To Identify And Treat Manic Depression Symptoms

For those that are suffering from manic depression symptoms, there is little good that they see or feel. Manic depression is much different from that of clinical depression. Manic is also and more commonly known, as bipolar disorder, a life threatening condition. If you feel that you have any of these manic depression symptoms, or you know someone that does, it is imperative that you seek out medical attention as soon as possible for them.

In most cases, this type of depression seems to be inherited, but this is not true in all cases, and to various levels of degrees. Unlike clinical depression, manic depression symptoms will go through cycles, from being manic to being depressed. Most of the time, these mood changes will be gradual but they can also be drastic and quickly changing.

Manic Depression Symptoms

Manic depression symptoms are broken down into two categories. The symptoms are different for each part of the cycle that the manic depressive will go through.

Mania State:

Here are some symptoms that may be evident:

· Poor judgment

· Inappropriate elation, feelings of being happy for no reason

· Inappropriate irritability, feelings of being mad, angry or upset that are unfounded

· Insomnia that is severe

· The speed at which you talk is increased. You may be louder too.

· Increased energy that is unfounded

· Disconnected and thoughts that are racing through your mind

· Sexual desires are increased, often to much higher levels

· Social behavior that is in appropriate or out of character

Depressed Symptoms:

Here are some symptoms that may be evident:

· Fatigue or decreased levels of energy. Feelings of being slowed down physically and mentally.

· Loss of appetite, weight loss that is not due to dieting. Or, on the other hand, sometimes people can be overeating and gaining weight.

· Continuously anxious or depressed, saddened mood.

· Feelings that are guilt, helplessness, worthlessness.

· The things that you used to love are no longer interesting. Activities and hobbies seem to be lost.

· Lack of interest in sexual relations.

· Insomnia or suddenly waking up. Or, you may be oversleeping only to feel not rested.

· Thoughts of death, suicide or attempts of this type.

· Loss of concentration, attentiveness.

· In ability to make decisions, even simple ones.

· Physical conditions that do not seem to respond to treatments including chronic pain, headaches and digestive disorders.

Manic depression systems will cycle through these states. In clinical depression symptoms, only the depressed symptoms listed above may be evident. Those that are suffering from these conditions should have depression tests done to diagnoses them properly. Only depression tests can provide accurate information about this condition. Some or all of the manic depression symptoms listed here may be in play. Anxiety and depression treatments are available to treat these manic depression symptoms and depression medicines can help to control these feelings.

Manic Depression Symptoms and Natural Treatment

Manic depression is a disorder where the patient experiences mood swings ranging from overly high to overly low mood. It is also known by another name - bipolar disorder. When someone suffers from this type of depression, there are unusual and drastic changes in the person's moods and energy levels.

This type of depression can hit both men and women. It can be found in people of all ages and from all walks of life. Genetics can play a role in manic depression as it is sometimes found to run in a family. This form of depression has a recurring pattern to it. It needs continuous and probably long term treatment. One of the most important things in treatment is to have proper sleep at regular timings.

Most people resort to medicines for treating manic depression symptoms. Mood stabilizing drugs and antidepressants are prescribed to patients. The thyroid levels of the patient will also be monitored as a majority of bipolar patients also suffer from abnormal thyroid functioning.

It is important not to lose hope or courage while trying to treat manic depression. Whenever you are faced with any doubts, you have to show strong resolve and fierce determination. If you are determined to overcome this disorder, then you may find within yourself enough courage to face hurdles and disappointments.

I suggest that you avoid medication for manic depression treatment. Medicines can cause unwanted side effects. There are other ways of treating this disorder like herbal remedies and even behavior therapy. Herbal remedies may not have as many side effects as prescription medicine. So they are a good option if you want a natural treatment.

Keep in mind that there is a cure for every disease and disorder on this planet. For treating this disorder, you should seriously consider behavior therapy. It teaches you how to manage your emotions and avoid mood swings.

The Importance of Identifying Manic Depression Symptoms

Manic depression or bipolar disorder is a chronic condition that affects many people around the world. This condition affects not just the life of the person suffering from such a condition, but the lives of the people that surrounds him/her as well. An individual with bipolar disorder loses interest in the things he/she gets joy from and are often unable to do his/her daily activities. The good news is that, today, this condition can be controlled through treatments or medications. The success of treatments for such disorders, however, depends largely on early diagnosis of this condition. This process involves identifying manic depression symptoms exhibited by the individual thought to be suffering from such disorder.

While early detection of the condition plays a major role in keeping the condition from getting worse and in helping the person who is suffering from the illness have a normal life, it is crucial to know the signs and symptoms of manic disorder. Although the degree of depression symptoms exhibited by the person depend largely on his/her personality, the common symptoms include mood swings and shifts in activity levels. These mood swings usually last for months, causing trouble to the lives of the people that surround the person with manic disorder as well. These mood swings or alternating pattern of level of emotions vary depending on the stage of his/her condition and his mental phase. Although there is no single cause of this condition has been identified yet, studies suggest this illness can be triggered by external or environmental factors, such as career, family or work issues or problems; or internal or genetic factors.

When the person suffering from such condition experiences the manic phase, among the symptoms he/she would exhibit include high self-esteem, rapid thoughts and speech, poor judgment, optimism, euphoria, aggressiveness, high energy levels, and difficulty in sleeping. At the other end of the mood spectrum, the person exhibits anxiety, guilt, sadness, helplessness, fatigue, hopelessness, lack of energy and interest in the activities he normally enjoys, suicidal tendencies, and chronic pain. These are among the manic depression symptoms the person exhibits when he/she is in the depressive state.

The symptoms of this condition also affect the appearance of the individual suffering from this condition. And depending on the individual's personality and the stage of his/her depression, the period of time he/she exhibits these symptoms could last months. The intervals between depression episodes also vary. Some people suffering from such condition exhibit a predictable pattern of manic depression symptoms, while others show no indications. Treatments or medications to administer also depend largely on the type of symptoms and the level or intensity of the symptoms exhibited by the individual.

It is important to take note that having manic depression is actually not a hindrance to a productive and happy life. Anyone with this condition can still live a normal life especially if it is diagnosed at the early stage. It is, thus, important for anyone experiencing manic depression symptoms to consult a physician to determine whether he/she is already suffering from the condition. This should help prevent the condition from getting worse.

a) Genetic factor

As discussed earlier, manic depression tends to run in families. Chromosomes tend to show genetic abnormalities.

b) Fast biological clock

Hypothalamus, the center of the brain shows a super fast biological 'clock'. The clock is actually a small cluster of nerves known as the supra chiasmatic nucleus or SCN. This works towards regulating an individual's daily cycle of life and affects waking and sleeping.

c) Neurotransmitters

Patients of manic depression are known to have higher levels of vesicular monoamine transporter. It is a protein inside the brain that's known to regulate neurotransmitters.

Other causes include abnormal activity of brain and infectious agents such as viruses.

Learning to Spot the Symptoms of Manic Depression

Manic depressive disorder is a serious mental illness that can leave somebody depressed, lonely, and unable to keep up a job. These situations can produce serious problems in a person's existence. That's why it's so crucial to treat this medical condition as early as possible. However, treating the illness can be complicated if you aren't even aware that you have it.

Like any health concern, there are warning signs of manic depression. Regrettably, these indicators are challenging to spot in some persons because the condition isn't just about depressive behavior. Rather, there are circumstances when an individual with this medical condition will feel enormous delight and contentment, and there will be other occasions where their sense of desperation is extreme and overwhelming.

Nevertheless if you know which symptoms to watch out for, you can unquestionably recognize an individual with this condition, or diagnose it in yourself. The following are several of the more common signs of this serious psychological illness.

People with manic depression frequently progress from mood to mood as if they were giving a person a handshake. If you know an individual who is often happy one minute, and then remote or down the next, this mental disease might be the reason. The highs are very high and the lows are very low. In the course of just one conversation, somebody with this illness might have a range of feelings and moods. This volatility is why friends and relations often have an awkward time talking to a person who has this illness.

A further warning sign to look out for is a failure to keep up a regular sleep schedule. There may be occasions when an individual sleeps for long hours in a row, while at other times the individual doesn't sleep for two or three days in a row. This lack of ability to sustain a consistent sleep schedule is very common for persons with this form of depression. Additionally, their sleeping needs can change with no notice at all.

If you are afflicted with manic depressive disorder, you might have a hard time coping with your compulsions. Once you get a plan in your mind, then you could feel as if you have to do something about it without delay. This is why too many people with this disorder drop out of school or change occupations at the drop of a hat. A lot of them may not even be able to keep up steady friendships or make long term plans that they will be able to stick to.
